MARKETING MATTERS

Do you wait for your customers to come to you? Or have you actively sought them out? What do you think about direct selling?

Direct selling means a representative of your business actually hits the pavement and reaches out to customers and prospects. Renowned as one of the leading direct selling companies in the world, Avon has been using direct selling as its marketing strategy for decades. Your business could also benefit from using this sales model, as it puts a face to your business and reinforces your customer service.

If you are keen to implement direct selling, you need to consider the following:

Do you have a suitable staff member who can confidently go into the premises of your existing and potential clients and speak with them? If not, you may need to hire an additional employee.

What are you trying to achieve? It is all well and good to have someone ‘on the road’ but unless you have an objective in mind, it is easy to fall in the habit of just driving around and visiting people without achieving anything.

Who is going to be visited? Existing customers to strengthen your relationship or prospects?

What tools will you arm your staff with to achieve their goal? Will they have samples of your products and/or previous work, testimonials, a folder with information on your company, a Powerpoint presentation, etc?

What will you leave with the people you visit? It is a good idea to leave something that reminds them of your company and your visit. For instance, a calendar with all your contact details could be both useful for your client and also a good branding tool. You may also choose to follow up with a greeting card thanking them for their time and occasional flyers promoting specials.

How will you target people? The most logical method would be to choose a geographical area and visit everyone who works within that parameter. But if you’ve got a different tact for existing clients versus prospects, it may be easer for your staff member to present the same ‘pitch’ several times on the one day, rather than swapping and changing.

Is a party plan arrangement suitable for your business? For instance, could you invite groups of local businesses to an evening when you demonstrate the benefits of good business card design? This may be a viable extension of businesses that operate from home or online.

Direct selling does require a different skill set and possibly unique tools to achieve your objective. Therefore you need to consider whether it’s adaptable to your business. It also requires time, which can be a challenge for any business owner at the best of times! Like any marketing activity, track the results and evaluate its effectiveness against any other activities before committing big dollars or many hours to it.

Best of luck – I hope your shoes are made for walking!

CASE STUDY – Perforated DL postcard

Word-of-mouth campaigns can be taken to a new level with the use of perforated DL postcards.

Word-of-mouth coupon postcard
With an uncertain economy, some clever companies are relying on word-of-mouth campaigns more than ever before. Here’s one simple way to spread the message about a company, product or service: Integrate the artwork of a business card onto the bottom of a DL postcard. On the back of the business card section, include a special offer or coupon that gives the holder a discount. On the remainder of the DL postcard, put a different offer, leaving room for the original recipient to mail it to a friend to ‘spread the love’. A perforation between the postcard and business card sections makes it easy for the recipient to use. Why not suggest this clever and cost-effective marketing idea to your customers when they order their next business cards?

IN THE KNOW AT IBS

Continuing from last month, we’d like to introduce Andrew, another of our employees in the factory. Andrew is responsible for print finishing. Here’s three quick questions and answers for you to learn more about Andrew

Q, 1. What do you think is the most important aspect of printing?
A. The most important aspect of printing is that the job is set up correctly from beginning to the end, because the finishing department is the most important area in the factory!

Q, 2. What is your printing experience?
A. My printing experience encompasses 26 years in the industry, with 24 of those in South Australia. I have worked for such places as Griffin Press, Hyde Park Press, Stallard & Potter and Finsbury just to name a few, in either guillotining or folding.

Q, 3. Tell us something interesting about yourself.
A. Outside of IBS I love spending time with my family, keeping fit by swimming and I am a member of Surfers Paradise SLSC, where I am a volunteer lifesaver and have been for nearly 30 years.
